Do I need a hearing test?
There are several reasons why someone might need a hearing test:
Age-Related Hearing Loss
As people age, it’s common to experience some degree of hearing loss. Regular hearing tests can help detect these changes early on.
Exposure to Loud Noise
Regular exposure to loud noises, whether at work or during leisure activities, can damage hearing over time. A hearing test can assess any damage and help in taking preventive measures.
Difficulty in Hearing Conversations
Struggling to follow conversations, especially in noisy environments, or frequently needing to turn up the volume on the TV or radio are signs that a hearing test might be needed.
Tinnitus
Experiencing ringing, buzzing, or other noises in the ears (tinnitus) can be a symptom of hearing loss or other ear-related issues.
Ear Problems
Issues like frequent ear infections, a feeling of fullness in the ears, or dizziness can indicate hearing problems.
Routine Health Check-Up
Sometimes, a hearing test is part of a routine health check-up, especially for older adults or those at risk for hearing loss due to genetics or medical conditions.
Preventive Health Care
Regular hearing tests can be a preventive measure to maintain good ear health, even if there are no noticeable symptoms of hearing loss.
Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, can increase the risk of hearing loss.
To Establish a Baseline
If there’s no known hearing issue, a hearing test can establish a baseline to compare against in future tests, helping to detect any gradual changes in hearing.
In any case, early detection through a hearing test can be crucial in effectively managing and treating hearing loss or related ear problems.
What to expect during a visit
A warm welcome
Either Ron or our audiologist, Anne-Marie will greet you and make you feel at ease before the hearing assessment.
Initial Consultation
The appointment starts with a discussion about your hearing health. This includes talking about any symptoms you’re experiencing, your medical history, and your exposure to loud noises.
Physical Examination
The audiologist might examine your ears using an otoscope. This is to check for any physical blockages like earwax, inflammation, or structural issues in your ears.
Hearing Tests
You’ll undergo a series of tests in a sound-treated room or booth. These include Pure-Tone Audiometry, where you’ll wear headphones and indicate when you hear sounds at different pitches and volumes. Speech tests might also be conducted, where you listen to and repeat spoken words at varying volumes.
Results Discussion
After the tests, the audiologist will discuss the results with you, explaining your hearing thresholds and what they mean for your hearing ability.
Advice and Next Steps
If hearing loss is detected, the audiologist will discuss your options, which could include hearing aids, strategies to protect your hearing, or referrals for further medical treatment if necessary.
