Introduction to ear wax and it's function
Ear wax is a natural substance made in the ear canal. It is important for keeping our ears healthy. Ear wax catches dirt and stops it from reaching the sensitive parts of the ear. It also has special properties that protect the ear from infections. Usually, ear wax comes out on its own when we chew or talk, so our ears stay clean naturally.
If your ears become blocked, please get in touch and book a free ear examination with our audiologist.
When it becomes a problem - signs & symptoms
Ear wax can sometimes build up too much, leading to problems. If you have too much ear wax, you might feel like your ear is blocked, have trouble hearing, feel ear pain, hear ringing sounds, or feel itchy or sometimes dizzy.
If you notice these signs, it’s important to see an audiologist. Trying to remove ear wax by yourself can push it deeper and cause more issues.
Preparing for your appointment
We recommend applying Earol twice daily for 4 or 5 days before your ear wax removal appointment. Please read supplied manufacturer instructions on use.
Earol is available for purchase in our clinic.

What to expect during a visit
A Warm Welcome Awaits You
From the moment you step into Vons Hearing, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome. Our friendly team is here to make you feel comfortable and at ease, ensuring a pleasant start to your visit.
Understanding the Process
Before we begin the ear wax removal, our audiologist will take the time to explain the process to you. We believe in keeping our clients informed, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. This is a great time to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have.
The Duration of the Appointment
The ear wax removal process typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the softness of the wax. We understand your time is valuable, and we strive to provide efficient yet thorough care.
Utilising Micro-Suction
At Vons Hearing, we use micro-suction for ear wax removal, widely regarded as the safest method. This gentle technique involves using a specialised suction device to carefully remove the wax from your ear canal. It’s a quick and comfortable procedure, ensuring minimal discomfort.
After the Procedure
Once the wax is removed, you might notice an immediate improvement in your hearing. Our audiologist will provide after-care advice and answer any questions you may have post-procedure.
After-Care
Taking Care of Your Ears After the Procedure
After your ear wax removal, it’s important to take special care of your ears. Here are some tips:
Keep Your Ears Dry
Avoid getting water in your ears for a few days. When showering, gently place a cotton ball coated with a thin layer of petroleum jelly at the entrance of your ear canal to keep water out.
Avoid Inserting Objects
Don’t put cotton swabs, fingers or any other objects in your ear canal. This can prevent irritation or re-impaction of wax.
Watch for Signs of Infection
If you notice any unusual symptoms like increased pain, drainage, or hearing loss, contact your audiologist or doctor.
Ear Drops if Advised
If your audiologist recommends ear drops to maintain ear health, use them as directed.
Follow-up Appointments
A follow-up appointment might be recommended to ensure your ears are healing well and to prevent future wax buildup. During your visit, our audiologist can:
Check the health of your ear canal and eardrum.
Assess if there’s any residual wax that needs attention.
Provide personalised advice on ear care and wax prevention.
Regular check-ups help maintain ear health and hearing quality. If you experience any issues or have concerns about your ears, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Risks Of Improper Removal
Improper removal of ear wax, especially when done at home or by someone untrained, can lead to several risks and complications. These include:
Ear Canal Damage
Inserting objects like cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other tools into the ear canal can scratch, irritate, or even tear the delicate skin, leading to infections or bleeding.
Wax Impaction
Instead of removing the wax, improper techniques can push it deeper into the ear canal, causing impaction. This can lead to discomfort, pain and even more significant hearing loss.
Perforated Eardrum
Aggressive or incorrect removal attempts can puncture the eardrum, a serious condition that can cause severe pain, bleeding and permanent hearing loss.
Infection
Introducing foreign objects into the ear can bring bacteria or other pathogens, leading to external ear infections (otitis externa) or more severe inner ear infections.
Hearing Damage
Excessive force or incorrect methods can damage the delicate structures inside the ear, potentially leading to temporary or permanent hearing loss.
Tinnitus
Improper ear wax removal can sometimes cause or worsen tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Dizziness and Vertigo
The ear plays a crucial role in balance, and improper wax removal can disturb the ear’s normal functioning, causing dizziness or vertigo.
To minimise these risks, it’s best to seek professional help from our audiologist. We use safe, appropriate methods tailored to your individual needs.
